Cattleya maxima
This is a tipo flower flower on a highland (short statured) plant. I split this plant in 2013 and this is the first blooming since then and it only gave me 2 flowers; which is not unexpected. The flowers appear more blue/purple in these pictures than previous ones ( Cattleya maxima) because I took the pics with the light from the LED's that I use to grow this guy (from First Rays). Under sunlight, the flowers are a more pink color, but the color seen in these pics are true to how they look under the lights.

Actually, I originally bought this hoping for a coerulea because both of its parents are coerulea from Exotic Orchids of Maui. While I was disappointed at first that it didn't turn out 'blue,' even as a 'plain Jane' tipo I still find it truly beautiful. And add to the fact that it grows faster than most other Catts I've owned, I've decided to keep it; though I think I'll probably chop it in half every other year to trade with other growers. |
