Lc. Danae 'Chaudron'
About 50 years back the French nursery of Vacherot & Lecoufle was among the leading companies for top Cattleyas in Europe, if not worldwide. I still love their great crosses. This Lc. Danae combines Laelia tenebrosa, Cattleya dowiana and Cattleya labiata influence. The velvety red lip makes a great contrast with the intense apricot flowers of good substance. Maybe I can add daylight photos soon.
For those interested in Greek mythology, Danae was daughter of king Akrisios, she was locked away from the world in order to escape the curse of an oracle. Zeus however managed to visit her changed into golden rain, and so she became mother of hero Perseus. In the epics of Homer the Greek peoples or Hellenic peoples are called Danaans, their 'greek gift' is a a danaic gift. When the horse was brought into Troy, the blind prophet Teiresias said: Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes. (= Whatever it is , I fear the Greek even if they bring a present).
There were several clones of Lc. Danae selected, chaudron is a bowl.
