Default Broughtonia sanguinea v pink

This specie is endemic to the Northern Caribbean and the Bahamas....my instinct was to give these island baby lots of water;wrong! As per my research; this grows in hot mainly arid conditions on the other side of the island and easy to care for if certain basic environmental factors are provided. In general, they do not grow well in pots as they are very intolerant of overwatering and much prefer free draining media such as tree fern rafts, cork slabs, coconut husk, hard driftwood, wood or plastic basket etc. I give it lots of light and good air movement....has to thoroughly dry out before being watered. These plants will quickly rot it kept constantly wet. Yet, I have this in a 2” clay pot with small bark, lava rock, charcoal and hydroton because my apartment tends to be too dry with the central airconditioning; maybe in a couple of years I will repot this in a wooden basket.
Mature plants do best if re-mounted every two to four years. When re-mounting, cut short the roots, as closely to the pseudo bulbs as possible, (sounds drastic but it must be done). Tie them firmly in place, using clear nylon strings, plastic coated wire or strips of panty-hose. Newly mounted plants should be held securely in place so that they cannot shift. Never use bare wire. Within a few days, new roots will emerge and attach to the medium. If you forget to repot, the old bulbs will die as the old dead roots will absorb more water keeping it wet and encouraging fungal and bacterial growth. If you notice the old bulbs start dying, it must be repotted immediately.
