Sophronitis (laelia) tenebrosa x Cattleya intermedia, Does this hybrid exist? Female
Question Sophronitis (laelia) tenebrosa x Cattleya intermedia, Does this hybrid exist?

Hi, I have an orchid of "Laelia tenebrosa" and a "Cattleya intermedia", out of curiosity would look like the flower of a crossing of these 2 species, and it can not find images, as if this hybrid does not exist, it is rare .

On the website of "Royal Horticultural Society" I have found that this mixture is called "Cattleya interbrosa".
The International Orchid Register / RHS Gardening

But this name does not find anything.

Anyone have a photo of this Hybrid? I have a lot of curiosity.

Greetings.

Hi Salamandra; this doesn't seem to be a popular plant at all, there is no picture of it in OrchidWiz, and this cross has only one registered subsequent cross (with Brassavola martiana, yielding Bc. Nube de Oro). Considering Intebrosa was registered in 1950 and the other in 1969, it seems not to be something with overly loved flowers that hybridisers saw potential in. I guess we'll have to wait and see what yours yields if you decide to cross it!

I'm actually quite surprised that I can't find something like Paphiopedilum Primary Hybrids for cattleya primary hybrids, but I guess the Cattleya fans have better things to do than mucking about on the internet, unlike the slippernuts.

Well my "L. tenebrosa" is young yet, if any blooms year while the "C. intermdia" I try.
It is curious that there are no photos, no one has tried to cross them, with two orchids so common that many people have in their collection of orchids.

Regards and thanks for responding!

PD: Incredible website, too bad I did not find anything similar to the Cattleyas!

People have definitely crossed them - it just seems pictures of the cross haven't made it to the Internet - and I'm not enough of a cattleya fan to have any cattleya books that might have such a primary hybrid pictured - maybe someone else does have a picture somewhere. I also don't see any awards, which makes photographs even less common!

It would be quite nice if the RHS opened up the images that are usually submitted with each cross registered as an online resource, as many patent offices have made patent papers and illustrations available. I wonder what the chances of that happening are?!
