I have them growing next to several herbs and next to another mini-catt. The two orchids are inside a large bowl with pebbles which seems to provide enough humidity. I'm curious though, I've found some aphids on my mint plant and was wondering if that would spread to the orchids. I haven't seen any signs of infestation yet, but I was wondering if anyone used some sort of pesticides on their orchids? I tried using more gentle pesticides on several house herbs before and I think that's what killed them.

I do not think I would use pesticides on herbs I may end up eating. Would use a mix of dish soap water and alcohol. chop down the infested branches.

On orchids I would use pyrethrins, imidclorprid systemic. but first I would try the soap / neem oil stuff

For the aphids, get a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and a windex type sprayer. It'll kill the lil buggers, but not harm your plants.

I have a few B. nodosa hybrids (about 50) and most are mounted on either hardwood mounts, or tree fern totems. We cannot water them enough. BUT, I water less during our coldfronts. So they may get a watering every other day, when temps go below 60% we won't water.

Keep in mind we are growing outside in zone 10b (south Florida)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to restart this thread because I just repotted my brassavola since it was in a tiny pot and was putting out new growth on at least 4 different sights. When I took it out of its pot most of it's old roots were rotted, but lots of new roots are shooting out to support the new growth. The plant is quite small so I fertilize it via misting since the root tips are mostly on the surface. I place it under a bathroom faucet once a week to flush out extra minerals and salts.

It's been a few days since I've repotted it into a slightly larger pot. What's the best way to encourage root growth? I'm going away next weekend, and I'm worried they might all shrivel up in my dry room.

Fairly dry media (after a good drenching) in a humid environment would tend to encourage root growth - it's often recommended to water a plant well after repotting it and then mostly leave it alone with regard to watering for some time - perhaps some light misting, but no more than that. Bottom heat from e.g. a heat mat is supposed to encourage root growth.

Make sure it's well anchored in the new mix as they hate to be wobbly (I usually use wooden kebab ["sosatie" in South Africa] skewers to wedge plants in place until they root firmly).

Not sure what to do about your couple of days absence - most plants are pretty tough though and will be OK with a few days of neglect.

Thanks Discus for your comment. I'm probably just a little paranoid since I've lost other kinds of plants while I was away for more than 2 days. I used aluminum wire to anchor it to the pot. I'm keeping all my plants close together to maintain humidity. I'm not sure how direct sun through 2 panes of glass will effect a newly potted brassavola, but we'll just have to see. There's lots of new growth, which has progressed even after repotting.
