Default Awarded Unregistered Blc.

This plant was awarded by the AOS in 1990. The award was an AM/AOS of 80 pts given to Carmela Orchids. At the time the plant was unregistered and I have never been able to find the name of the cross or if it was registered. I've tried to contact Carmela but have gotten no response. If anyone knows what this plant is I'd appreciate the info for my records.

An unregistered plant cannot get an AOS award. It can be given a provisional award, with the requirement that it be registered.

I think you're simply going to have to keep trying to contact them.

Carmela has originated a number of registered cattleya-types (about 100), but the awarded plant may not have been originated by them, so doing a search in OrchidWiz is "iffy", especially since not all entries have photos.

Ray, I know the award was only provisional and kept a lookout in AQ for a number of years after the award was given but never saw the plant there and assumed that either I missed it or that the award was still waiting for the cross to be registered. I haven't gotten AQ for a number of years now (can't afford it) so don't know if the award ever went through.

Thanks, Joann. I'm hoping too that someone recognizes it or that it was cloned.

I don't understand. To my knowledge, the AOS would never award a plant without knowing the parentage.

Also if the award was awarded to Carmela on a provisional basis and they didn't follow through with the registration, wouldn't that bar them from ever receiving another AOS award?

You are correct that the award should have been followed and that the AOS would not award other plants, but if it was not a Carmela cross and they were unable to get it registered the registration may never have happened, though I don't know about that - I just haven't been able to find it. The parents would have had to be available at the time the cross was given a provisional award, but I don't have them.

The registered name of your plant is Rsc. Mem John Odem. The cross is Rsc Rockdell x Rsc Toshie Aoki. I have this Orchid also so I will post mine for you to see. Cattmad
Sorry, I can't spell, Odem should read Odum and it was registered with the varietal name ' Carmela '.
Cattmad.
