Default Oldies

PLANT-Date Registered
BC Deesse-1947
C Porcia'Cannizaro' FCC/AOS-1927
C Luminosa-1901
BLC Ranger Six 'AOK'1964
BLC Nacouchee-1952
SLC Anzac 1921
BLC Victoria 'Bluebird'1929
LC Irene Finney - 1964
LC Ariel - 1907
And, this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. I would also kind of think about the virus problem. If someone tests the plant and it tests positive for virus it's probably a safe assumption that the plant is indeed virused. However, if it tests negative, I would not automatically assume that the plant is virus free. I am not aware of any false positives but the same can't be said of negatives.

That's some list. I used to have an Ariel Coerulea. I didn't know it was that old. I also had a Ranger Six which is now 6 feet under. It was one of my first orchids. The name reminded me of one of those old black & white tv westerns from the 50's.

Default Jones & Scully List

I will try to post at least one page from my catalog per day.

This is from the Jones & Scully 1971 catalog. Included are the descriptions listed therein.
Keep the lists coming! What really caught my eye was what they used in their crosses! There are some real classics there!

By any chance did you run across the "Imperial List"? (I may be confusing it with something called a "Criterion List").

I am interested in the new hybridization of catts as well as finding the oldies. I love it when they use the oldies in their hybridization program. Who do ya'll think has the best hybridization program for floofy orchids? So many of the old hybridizers have shut down/died and gone on to floofy orchid heaven

I am so sick of mericlones.

Hi Zozzi. I am primarily working with my Catt species, but want to make a few hybrid crosses using Harliquin "Act I". I really like the art shades & deep reds. Stewarts did some great "floofy" crosses. There aren't many in the US doing "classic" Cattleyas. I think the Japanese, Chinese & Hawaii have picked-up the torch breeding of standard Catts. I've added several to my collection (but can't pronounce half the names!). I wish someone would pick up where we left off in the 80's. Carter & Holmes and a few others still produce some good plants.

Check the 5th post in this thread. Charlie posted a link to the Hackneau site which has a book on hybridizing of Cattleyas called "American Cattleyas".

That is an interesting site jcaesar. I am going to have to get a copy of that book!

Kim, according to an article in an old AOS bulletin, Lc. Canhamiana was named in honor of Messrs.Veitch and Sons and first flowered by them in 1885. It was a cross of mossiae x purpurata

They have an "Imperial Collection" ---8 single spaced pages of orchid divisions. Per bulb price. the minimum order is 3 bulbs.

I quickly glanced at it and some bulbs cost as much as 150.00 each.

This is what the advertisement says:

"To adjust our inventory we are offering a 20% discount on the per bulb prices shown in RED! Such fantastic savings on Connoisseur Clones of Premium Quality are unheard of in the Industry, and, the more you buy, the more you Save."

*Indicated in parentheses is the year of the award, if known, and the points scored-if the awarding society bases its judging on the Point-score system. Flowering seasons named are for the western hemisphere.

Well, you can make new oldies. Seriously, just because the cross was registered 110 years ago doesn't mean you can't remake it. Someitmes, when focusing on a specific breeding goal (like floofy) you may find that you need to make your own breeding stock. The quality and availablitly of plants these days makes it very possible that a remake could turn out to be exceptionally different or unique in some way.

Having a breeding plan or goal puts you ahead of the pack, and thinking of what passes down the best "floof" is the right place to start. I'll let you know if I have any floofy pollen lying around.
