Default Cattleya eldorado 'Tucuxi'

Cattleya eldorado is one of my favorites among Cattleya species. The golden coming from the throat and opening into a solar disc is amazing! In this particular flower the golden disc reminds me of a flaming sun! The species is perfumed, generally poorer in form than this one. Another common characteristic little appreciated by the collectors is the 'Chinese moustache' the ventral sepals form. But, aside these technicalities the flower is beautiful!

Ah, I see the flaming sun! I kind of like the 'Chinese Moustache'.

Mauro, once again, you have a winner! Thank you, for showing your plant.

Why is Cattleya eldorado such an infrequently grown species? Is it difficult to maintain?

I purchased an NBS seedling in May. It has exciting parents, Fantasia 'Rafaela' X flamea orlata

That's a good question, Stitz! It's not one of the easiest, but also not that difficult. So, I believe that people give excessive importance to the artificial criteria which define what a 'good' plant should be and, in that case, Cattleya eldorado is not a choice. It is generally of poor form and the 'Chinese moustache' is almost always present. Perhaps that's the main reason. Nevertheless, this species has its own beauty and deserved to be more cultivated!
BTW, the sib you acquired promises!!

I agree. The judging system sets irrelevant (to the various species) criteria.

Another example, Cattleya elongata. I think that it's a "fun" plant to grow and it has beautiful flowers, yet it gets little recognition.

C'est la vie!
