If the roots are rotted, you'll know.
Rescue comes in the form to two aspects: getting the plant to grow new roots and preventing it from further desiccation while it does.
My number one suggestion is to acquire some Kelpak, mix up a solution (8-10ml/L) and immerse the entire unpotted plant in it for a few hours. (If you cannot get that, a liquid rooting hormone will work, but you'll have to rely on others for the concentration to use.)
Pot it up in a substrate with which you have experience and plan to use going forward. Moisture-holding but airy is the preference.
Water it in with the Kelpak solution and invert a clear plastic bag over the plant and pot, leaving the bottom open. That'll help maximize the humidity around the plant without becoming stagnant.
Place it in a very warm, shady location, and in a few weeks, new roots should emerge. Once they have penetrated the substrate, you can likely move it back to normal care.
