Cool Nothogenus

I have a Potinara that is in bud. I went online to read about it and saw the word nothogenus. Could someone please explain what that means.

From two different genus. Notho is latin for bastard, or from two unequal parents. Potinara are not naturally occurring in nature

It's the term for a human created hybrid genus. Potinara (abbreviation Pot.) is one, although it's now obsolete. It means a plant with ancestors from Brassavola (B.), Cattleya (C.), Laelia (L.) and Sophronitis (S.) But the Brassavola species used for most of them was moved into genus Rhyncholaelia (Rl.) The Laelia species used were mostly moved into Cattleya. All Sophronitis species were moved into Cattleya. Thus, most (not all) former Potinaras are now in nothogenus Rhyncholaeliocattleya, Rlc. You can look up ancestry at orchidroots.com .
