Rlc Miss Thailand - any experiences?
Default Rlc Miss Thailand - any experiences?

After months of deliberation I have taken the plunge and purchased my first Cattleya

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Miss Thailand

This is what Orchid Roots tells me of its heritage but I wondered if anyone here had any first hand advice? Either Miss Thailand specific or Catt’s in general?

ETA - I intend on growing indoors but in my slightly cooler area, on a windowsill supplemented with LED grow lights.

This hybrid will want to be grown on the warm side. It is a very complex hybrid, but going down the the level of its species makeup, the species that is the most heavily represented is C. dowiana (almost 40%), a definite warm grower. The rest of the species in its background is a mix, but most are intermediate or warm/intermediate. Catts do need fairly bright light, so those LED lights will be important, especially in the dark days of winter.

With regard to water/medium, Catts in general need to somewhat dry out between waterings. (Not bone dry). If it is a seedling, it will want a bit more moisture. Ideal medium is fairly large - lots of air spaces. A mature plant likes large bark (or other medium... some people have good results with lava rock). A seedling would want medium bark. Repot only when you see new roots just starting (little bumps) Look for new roots, not necessarily new growth - some Catts will put out the new growth months before the roots start (C. dowiana is notorious for that) and it's the new roots that will establish quickly in the new medium. A trick (that I have mentioned in other posts) coming from Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids - when you see those new roots and repot, put a date about 3 weeks BEFORE you repotted on the tag. The next time (you should pot with room for about 2 years' growth on a young plant) you will be able to anticipate the new roots, and pot ahead of their emergence.
