Many Mature Cattleya's but No Sheaths this year??
Default Many Mature Cattleya's but No Sheaths this year??

Hi, I am new to Cattleya's. I acquired over a doz. mature ones from various vendors earlier this year.

Most all have beautiful thick green tipped roots emerging and new growths but none are producing sheaths.

I've been regularly fertilizing with higher phosphorus content to stimulate blooms and using 'Kelpak" to no avail.

I have them in a south facing window with a sheer curtain on super sunny days.. so no burning or withering.

Any suggestions, info on why they are not producing sheaths would be much appreciated!

Thank You! Regina

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Have they made sheaths on new growths?

What are the numbers on your fertilizer? How are you mixing it?

Approximately how far north do you live? The commonest cause of not flowering with Cattleyas is insufficient light. Leaves should have a definite yellowish tinge. Sunburn can be prevented with a fan moving air, which will carry off the heat.

Many species and hybrids have definite flowering seasons. Bifoliates frequently flower Spring through Summer, while unifoliates tend to be Fall, Winter or Spring flowering.

Welcome! 6 months is really nothing in the life of an orchid. The plants may also be adjusting to their new home. I totally agree with ES, light could be a factor - Catts are relatively high-light plants. But patience... new growth and new roots are good signs, give them time.

Thank you Estacion sera and Roberta! Very good information and quite helpful.

I am now feeling more confident about these plants!

You two are a blessing to all of us who love the orchids!

I was asking about the fertilizer because high-phosphorus fertilizers are not bloom promoters, despite the advertising.
