Rlc Cattleya Nakornchaisri Red ... when will new root growth begin?
Smile Rlc Cattleya Nakornchaisri Red ... when will new root growth begin?

So i ordered a new Cattleya Nakornchaisri Red and she arrived today and i could not be happier, shes big has 8 psuedobulbs and the latest one is about to bloom which is exciting.

BUT ...

When i ordered it i specifically asked the grower to send me one in active growth and sending out new roots because i'm trying an experiment and want to try growing in self watering pots and Leca, and wanted to repot and start my new project.

Anyways im happy to wait it out for new growth to appear.

But for who has grown one before and has experience with this type of Cattleya, how long after dropping the blooms will she start to send out new roots from the latest bulb?

YAY on getting your Rlc Cattleya Nakornchaisri Red! I am anxious to hear what the experts have to say. Mine has been sitting idle for two years with no new roots; gorgeous foilage, but no new roots OR BLOOMS.

matt --- wow - so nice that you and ROBB and I are growing the same cross, and that yours is doing very well.

The ones over here generally flower during the summer time, or warm times of the year. In Australia, or my part of it ----- around January to March in general - from what I have seen. And after flowering, the weather is still nice and warm, so it keeps producing roots and new shoot not too long after flowering.

I don't have this Cattleya but I do have a few helpful resources.

The first is orchidroots.com where I learned that Cattleya Nakornchaisri Red has TWENTY THREE species in its ancestry. That's nuts! That makes it hard to to guess which species it will be most likely to act like. Since it's 50% C. dowiana you might assume it will be like that one (it roots after blooming on a mature cane, possibly after the next growth starts)

My second resource is this chart that lists all the cattleya species and when they root. (I attached that file below).(credit: William Rogerson and Sue Bottom)

With all that said, the best way is to pay attention to the plant and repot it when you see roots starting to emerge. Its foolproof.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your reply I appreciate it. Can I please confirm that it will root from the latest matured cane that has just bloomed? I think it’s nearing the end of its bloom. It’s been over 3 weeks. So fingers crossed she starts rooting soon.

It’s so nice we are growing the same plant. She is so beautiful and the fragrance reminds me of an old school red rose….when roses actually had a scent 😂

Thank you so much. I have never heard of this site I will definitely have a look.

It’s funny how it’s 50% Dowiana, that’s my dream orchid and I can’t for the life of me find it anywhere here in Thailand, so because of its parentage that’s why I purchased it.

LM. If nice growing conditions are maintained for the orchid, then it will certainly keep developing roots --- new roots. Generally - it is important that the orchid has healthy existing roots - needed to get water and nutrients into the orchid.

Did you take pics of the flowers?
