What does â€˜Ipeâ€™ mean in C. nobilior coerulea ipe? - Orchid Board

I’m looking over the most recent Bela Vista import list and they have a species variety called Cattleya nobilior coerulea Ipe but I can’t find any information on what exactly that means. I’ve also seen ‘Ipe’ listed after an alba form, so I don’t think it’s coerulea specific. There are so many form names in South America and it’s tough to find information about them sometimes!

Also any experts in nobilior care? I’ve fallen in love with the species but don’t have a lot of experience with this one.

Ipê is the name of a Latin American genus of trees, perhaps it was collected on a ipê tree and they deemed it good enough to give it a clonal name, or it could also signify that it's a descendent from that one plant.

Hi Jen,

I believe it's likely a specific clone that is a coerulea they've used in breeding (just like many awarded clones of different plants have the same registered name), but don't take my word for it!

On a related note, could you link the import list here? I think I'm on their mailing list but I didn't get this one. I love nobilior too, and should have some really nice plants coming into bloom in a few years! When I love a species, I tend to get most of the color forms available and that is certainly the case for this one.

Yeah you’re probably right. I saw it pop up a couple other places in my search so I thought maybe it was an indicator of some trait. I’ve come across a few other unfamiliar names for variations that seem to be commonly used throughout Brazil and Columbia but not really up here so I assumed this could be another one of those, but am your theory is probably more likely!
