I love those semi-alba types with the brilliant lip. Maybe the Brazilians can tell the difference between v. rojo-violeta and v. schusteriana ... semi-alba covers it. Gorgeous!

Lol. I am so glad this was resurrected. I also got a tenebrosa after this thread a palmetto hybrid. They have such cool form and great colors

Totally agree DC! The colours tan/brown and purple are really fascinating on those flowers. Definitely worth it, and thanks for mentioning you acquired one of these great plants DC!

I once had a Tenebrosa that I got from Odom. It was a seedling of a cross of two exceptional clones of Tenebrosa, and I was so exited about it. It did great, and I think it was probably nearing its first bloom, and then one day I walked outside to water it, and all the leaves had turned yellow and fallen off. It's like it happened overnight. I have no idea what it was. I unpotted it and the roots were fine, but there was black running through the center of the rhizome, so the plant was hopeless. I discarded it, and cried a few tears for it. I was so excited about that plant, it broke my heart when I lost it, especially since it happened so suddenly there was nothing I could have done. I hope to find another one someday. I know they're not uncommon, but I want a high quality one, not just any old one I can find. So there's my sad Tenebrosa story.

That is tragic! I have seen rot get into the rhizome, and kill a plant from the inside out. No idea where it comes from, just strikes out of the blue.

Check out Santa Barbara Orchid Estate or Cal Orchid - you might find what you are looking for. Call if you don't see what you're looking for on the websites... neither of them pay as much attention to their websites as they should, both have done breeding with exceptional parents.

Yeah, it was outside in the late spring, so day temperatures were in the 80s and nights were in the upper 60s

Thanks for the tip, but I actually already found one that i ordered. It's from Marlow's, and he always has the best plants. I've bought many nice things from him. The plant is a seedling of a cross of two particularly fine clones of Tenebrosa. Here's the link if you're interested in seeing. It's a little spendy, but I don't mind. I want it bad enough, and I know if will be a great plant coming from him:

That shouldn't have caused the problem... If that temperature range killed plants, I would have no orchids, that's typical at my house. L. tenebrosa is possibly a little warmer-growing than L. purpurata, but we're talking lows in the high 30's or low 40's F. to have cold issues. My pupuratas laugh at those temps, with no overhead protection. Tenebrosas I try to shelter a bit, next to the house.

Glad you found one. 'Rainforest' gets used a lot... have a couple of these from my California sources with that cultivar as a parent.
