Congrats! I love this one! The 'vanila/chocolate' fragrance is intoxicating! Maybe your tigrina could be a var. nigroviolacea, what do you think about? Some botanists had put Stan nigoviolacea as a aparted species, but Dr Jenny says they are in the same species, there are only color and size variation (Stan tigrina var. nigroviolacea is bigger and darker than Stan tigrina 'type')
I bought this plant last year as a seedling & see if I can grow & bloom this type of plant. Love the flower of these plants . Hopefully mine will bloom as nice as yours. Fingers crossed (they'll probably go to sleep before the plants get to blooming size ). Thanks for the pics.
Stanhopea blooms are always sureal.
It is amazing how they get that much flower out of such smaller SB.
You have obviously done a superb job growing this one.
Joe,
I have 5 or 6 stanhopeas that Ive bought over the past year and one of them is a nigroviolacea. I hope any blooms I get are even half as nice as yours!! Im always amazed at how big the flowers are in relation to such small p-bulbs! Good growing. Do you have any other stanhopeas?? I would love to see some pics. Also, what growing conditions do you have yours in? Ive noticed that my stanhopeas have really taken off in brighter rather than darker conditions; the opposite of what I keep reading.
Good job, Joe! I sent three of these to the orchid heaven (one tigrina and two nigroviolacea). I also lost one oculata and another that I can't remember the name. So, I quit! I don't know what the problem is, but no Stanhopea grows well in my place (or, most probably, the grower is not that skilled .). Well, seeing yours now, the temptation is back... Again, congratulations on your flowers!!
I have only tigrina. I grow in the basement under MH HID lights year round. The temps range from a low of 60 F. to a high of about 80 F. in the summer. Under these conditions I bloom phals, phrags, paphs, cattleya alliance, oncidium alliance, dendrobiums, vandas and gastrochillus. There may be one or two others that don't come to mind at the present.
