Catasetum pileatum ”Oro Verde”

Catasetum pileatum ”Oro Verde” is in bloom now. The flowers are huge – slightly more than 6 inches. But to tell truth I’m not really pleased with this year flowering – quality of the flowers could be better as well as their numbers (but, actually, I broke one during watering …..).

And now a question. I notice that all of your catasetum pileatums flower from the base of dormant bulbs. Is this true or is it just the picture playing trics on my eyes.

Oh, not really. Inflorescences on Catasetums typically produced on the newest pseudobulb. Usually they emerge from up to third ring above the base of the pseudobulb. Only few species among Catasetums produce them higher up on the pseudobuls and even more rarely they appear above the middle (which is on the other hand is typical for Cycnoches).
I never seen by myself inflorescences produced from the older pseudobulbs, but I heard that very, very seldom even such miracles can occur.

well... it depends on the species... many species produce spikes from young PBs but many others also from older (or mature) PBs...


"Oro Verde" is a very common and well known mericlone of a plant, which in theory came from Brazil. This mericlone would normally have greener petals than in this plant (Were they greener before? What about previous spikes?). Gena, I have had some discussion with the seller of this plant and he indicated that although similar to Oro Verde, this is a different mericlone. He could not remember the name of the clone, but he promised to contact the originator of these plants and find out.

Of cause, Ramón. Probably I explained not so well. What I meant is that PBs produced this year are normally flowering, not older PBs. But at what stage of their development they are flowering it, of cause, depends on species. Some species can flower on very young PBs, other on almost formed PBs, thirds on fully developed PBs etc. All my pileatums are flowering on almost developed PBs, but not dormant. All of them still in leaves and still growing, but at this time of the season they are growing in breadth, because top leaf is already formed for a while ago. But foliage is not dropped yet.

Yes, they are "whitish". I would not say they are pure white, but lighter than labellum, definitely lighter. I will try to find a picture from last year for comparison.

Gena that one is fantastic, is very nice with an amazing size, cool. I also thought to see a more greener coloration when I saw the thread. It looks like a variety between aureum and oro verde. Ramon has displayed another very good clone some time ago and that one is really oro verde.

I have another one with spike now .... will be interesting to compare them later.
