Default Catasetum Melana Davison

Spike bloomed female (mostly... there is one unopened bud on the spike that I think will be male, I'll post when it opens, would be great if both can be in the same photo) Just for reference, here also is a photo of the male flowers from a prior year. There is another spike coming, and I think it will be male (buds a bit more pointy) We'll see...

Very cool! Are you planning to pollinate?

No... I leave that to Fred Clarke. Except for that one unopened bud on the otherwise female spike, the other spike won't open for several more weeks. So the plant does seem to have a strategy to not self-pollinate. However, I do have other plants that frequently have both male and female flowers on the same spike (Ctsm. expansum especially) But I don't need a bazillion baby orchids...

its like the door to a cathedral, slowly creaking open, to reveal the absolute splendor of man and god inside....mostly god, a tiny bit of Fred (watering by ME )

pretty safe to assume it is all male this spike, looks like 8 flowers will open from 8 buds so that's always nice!

Spike definitely all male... even in the bud stage, female flowers are very distinctly different. Gorgeous!

i believe mine is the named cross between two other davisons (based on the tag). i do not know the specific one that Roberta posted -

i usually prefer to bring up an older relevant thread to make for a richer and deeper conversation when someone might be searching and need a resource. Is this the preferred method/courtesy? i hate to seem rude for taking Roberta's thread (it honestly never occurred to me until now that it might be taken wrong)

please let me know what the OB community thinks on that

Gotcha! A gentleman and a scholar you are. I appreciate the addition to the thread and hope Roberta agrees with your reasoning.

Totally agree! Please continue! Should not be a thread, but rather a branching tree!
