I know I'm the nth person to show these off, but it took a very long 5 years before any spikes appeared! Year after year more bulbs grew, but no spikes, and in one year, the plant fell over due to the weight of the leaves, and I had to divide the plant and remove most of the original bulbs.

The plant was expensive, so instead of giving up I kept persisting. I was really excited when I saw two spikes emerging early January, and thrilled at the number of blooms. They really are marvelous and beautiful to look at. And there seems to be a very faint peppermint smell?

Anyway, one thing I noticed was that some of the blooms, in the inner part, have an extra frilly "petal". Is that just an interesting mutation?

Congratulations - well done in persevering. The plant looks really healthy and has finally rewarded you with a great display - I don't care how many times a plant has been posted it's always nice to see other people's efforts.

Hope you don't have to wait another five years for the next blooms - did you change anything in it's culture?

I'm not sure... the only thing I remember doing is switching to using a smaller pot. I am not the most diligent waterer, and I don't generally do fertilizer solution, so I use sphag moss in the media and threw in some osmocote. In previous years the leaves of the bulbs were ribbed, and I thought that meant I wasn't watering it enough during the growth phase, so when the new bulb emerged I did my best to water it daily. The leaves still ended up with thinner ribbed leaves, but the bulb itself was very plump.

Wow that is stunning! I saw one in person for the first time ever a few weeks ago and it was amazing. Good for you for sticking with it for 5 years!

Do you mind me asking how much you purchased it for?
