Default watering off season catasetum

Hi everyone! I am pretry new at orchids, and I recently got a Monnierara Millennium in late july. It came with a spike about to bloom, and came on a pot with compacted moss. It did bloom, and lost flowers abt Mid August. The media has remained very humid the majority of the time, and for that reason I barely water it... i repoted it after it lost the flowers, as it came from a nursery where I got other orchids full of snails. The roots looked great and white, no snails or pests, the roots were very attached to each other, and I let them stay stick like that. The new media of Nz sphagn moss and coco ut husk, continues almost permanently humid. I think I have watered this guy may be 3 - 4 times total since I got it ( in 2 months) I noticed that the pseudobulb is wrinkling, but the media remains very humid. Should I water, as it is shrinking some? Or should I stop water as it is losing leaves? Thanks!!

Liliana, Catasetums generally develope a new root system each year coming from the new, developing bulb. The plants are quite dependant on this root system. As you repotted (wise move with possible snails, they adore succulent Catasetum roots and shoots), the new root system was damaged and, although it will attempt to recover, there is not that much time left in this growing season. I believe this is why you are seeing premature shriveling.
Now, as the plant has not shed its leaves, it is not done for this season. Do water it, but carefully, in that it gets to dry between waterings. Still, some moisture at the roots is best until all leaves have yellowed and fallen. After that, you can leave the plant 'just dry' until new growth starts in the Spring. Your plant is actually a bit ahead of itself, as most of mine (Monnierara, Fredclarkeara) are just starting to spike. I suspect yours was a recent import from either Hawai'i or Taiwan, maybe southern Cal. and used to warmer, sunnier conditions. It is still adjusting. Where are you in the US? I'm in Germany, so think Canada sun.
In short, I think you are doing everything right. Next season you may have a huge plant developing, as this one is healthy. I would suggest a clay pot, if you want extra weight for the growing plant next year. Repot after the new roots are a few inches long. Coarse bark and sphagnum are my preference. You'r current pot is a touch larger than the plant needs, but no big deal. With plastic I always underpot to prevent media rot.
Hope this helps. You plant may flower again this year after leaf fall.
Jamie

Thank you Jamie! Very helpful information! I am in Houston TX... usually humid and on the hot side most of the year... but inside home temperatures are around the 70-75.... and 60s at night...
I also just realized that I don't have much air circulation in the kitchen, which is where my plant is located right now 🤔...
Do you have any suggestions abt fertilizing? Should I decrease it now?

Thanks!!

Millenium Magic are strange in the sense that they make up their own rules and don't follow 'normal' dormancy behaviour. With mine I only slow watering and fertilizer when more than half the leaves are yellow/yellowing. Mine are in full growth mode right now and no yellow leaves even though temps have hit in the 40s outdoors. I've had blooms in January and plants that had no dormancy as new growth started before all leaves had fallen. This one is the most confusing to people as it's the one where it can be in full leaf in December - the month you are supposed to force dormancy, according to most experts.

Thank you! It makes sense to learn to read my plant 😉

Houston has great outdoor weather for these guys! Stephen Moffitt is an excellent Catasetinae grower who is a regular member of the Houston Orchid Society. I highly recommend joining the HOS and picking his brain about growing these guys in Houston. He's very knowledgeable and loves chat about orchids.
