Default Stanhopea lietzei

The last lietzei this season: straw color with fine red dots and a purple 'eye-spot'. This variety is relatively uncommon (but not rare) in cultivation. The only spike that I could save! The attack of slugs & snails stopped (I found some mesurol, which is forbidden in Brazil) but the rain is still ongoing....

Wow those are great!! At least you were able to save one spike!! Hopefully next year will be better. Also, I was wondering about your rain problems. Is there any explanation (ie. El Nino or La Nina) for your excessive rain this year or is it just a wet one? Im curious because La Nina years mean the month of March in Hawaii is even more wet than normal, ie. the orchids need special attention.

Hi Steve!

The current "La Niña" is only "moderate" (according meteorologists), and in 2007 we had less rain (and higher temps!) than usual! I don't know this january is only a isolated fenomena (in january usualy rains a lot, but typical 'summer rain', lots of heat and sun all day and showers in the late afternoon) or all the summer will be this way (lower temps and continuous rain). No only orchids are in danger , but the Carnival! The forecast is: rain during all Carnival! A little local 'tragedy' !
