Cycnoches Golden Shower 'HOF#2'
Default Cycnoches Golden Shower 'HOF#2'

I have seen this plant in bud at a local farmer's market a few weeks ago, but I did not pay much attention.

Well, I saw this one again in bigger bud at an orchid store today and just grabbed it. It just looked so unique with those yummy looking fat buds dangling down.

A few people on the street stopped and asked me what I'm carrying.

There were a whole bunch of these, most of them were of the same size but I tried to pick rather smallish plant with most buds on, so this one came home with me.

It is supposed to be fragrant yellow flowers.

Questions, so do I give this plant the same care as catasetum??? with dry winter rest?
Also, how big do this plant get if anyone out there grows this??
I have seen some really big cycnoches before and that made me wonder if this is a small hybrid or something that will go really big soon.

Last, how do you pronounce the name???

Thank you in advcance!

Looking good. Alec Pridgeon pronounces it 'sic-NOE -keez'. Good enough for me.

I've grown both of the parents of this one, but never the hybrid. Chlorochilon is fairly large, but herrenhusanum is smaller, about the same size as barthiorum, so the cross should somewhere in between.

I wouldn't keep it bone dry in the winter rest, just reduce watering and stop fertilizing. Temperature should always be over 20 °C.
Plant size is more like herrenhusanum - intermediate.

How did you enjoy growing the parent species??

I read an article saying how both easily get rots.
What is your opinion on that?

Sorry to say but herrenhusanum and Golden Showers both seem to be very susceptible to rot in the base of the new bulb, at least with my growing conditions.

Dang! I guess I'll just have to enjoy the best out of this bloom then. lol

Even when you wait until the new growth get quite big before resuming watering?

Two questions, do these last only for about one week??

Is dropping leaves while flowering normal?
Almost all pictures I have seen online show blooming plants with leaves intact.
Mine was all green and in just two days at my place, all the leaves are yellowing while the buds are still slowing growing.

Yes, rot can be a problem with many of the Cycnoches. I never had a problem with new growth rotting out as much as I did in winter during dormancy. And this was in Hawaii where it doesn't really get that cold! I also let my plants go bone dry and still sometimes they would rot for reasons I never understood.

A week or so is about normal for male flowers, females last longer. Leaf drop can happen at any time in the fall, so I wouldn't worry about the timing. Just water less and withhold all fertilizer.

the buds have not yet fully opened.... it will be quite a display soon and fragrant.... the plant got high energy and enough brightness to produce two spikes....after its bloom it will lose the leaves and then start winter rest....hopefully your new growth will be bigger than this plant....my Catasetinae plants are also in spike
