Default Peristeria elata double spiking

This is truly a species that is a great teacher of patience. Not only does it need to become fairly large before it blooms, but the spikes also seem to take forever to form. Two spikes this year, so I'm kind of excited about the possibilities.

At this rate I'll probably see blooms around Christmastime! The tallest spike is well over 3 feet in length, but at least buds are starting to emerge. Can't wait for the flowers to arrive--even if one of my neighbors is still convinced that it's an asparagus plant and not an orchid.

Default Peristeria elata flowers

I should probably have taken the plant indoors a few days ago before I decided to take photographs of it, since the high humidity and rain are causing the blooms to spot. But they're still pretty attractive (in my opinion), and the smell is fantastic, reminding me of chocolate mint. Texture is very waxy. I might bring it indoors for the next couple of weeks to see if I can get cleaner flowers. Eight blooms are open now, and the tallest spike still has about fifteen buds forming. Spike height is over four and a half feet tall so far.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, it's a cool plant. I'm just a little disappointed by the spotting. It only appears after the blooms have been open a few days, and I'm not sure what causes it. The plant's in a location that gets great air circulation, and I can't imagine that the humidity here is higher than it is in its native Panama. Maybe I just need to bring it in when it blooms and hope that the ceiling fan and the lower in-house humidity will keep the ugly black speckling from showing up. Thanks again for your comments.
