Catasetum expansum Male
Default Catasetum expansum

Catasetum expansum is one of my favourites. It is endemic to western Ecuador where it growers in dry forest.
Species name derived from Latin “expansus” which means “expanded”, referring to the size and the form of the lip.

Whole inflorescence

Now Catasetum expansum is flowering for the second time this season and I thought it would be rather interesting to compare male flowers with female flowers on the same plant from last year. Here they are.
