Weird spots that ooze sap
The leaves on my newest catasetum growth is speckled with tiny yellow spots, each of which is oozing sap. Is this edema or something worse?

A photo might be helpful, but oozing sap does not sound like edema.

Yes, photos are needed for this. I've never heard of this before. Edema just shows up as raised bumps on the leaves, no oozing or yellow spots.

Use a magnifying glass. Are they yellow aphids?

Something has been munching. Catasetinae are magnets for spidermites (which are too small to see but puncture the plant tissues which can lead to the oozing ). If it were my plant, I'd be treating with a miticide.

I agree mites should be suspected every time Catasetums look wrong, and I agree that could be mite damage. I prefer 70% alcohol (rubbing alcohol in the US) rather than miticides, covering all surfaces of the entire plant, medium and pot, and I spray all the leaves once a week with water to keep populations down. Insecticidal soap can also be used but I think alcohol is better.

I don't see any mite damage here at all. The yellow spots are something that seems to have popped up all over the world in recent years, including my own collection. No idea what causes it and it doesn't seem to hurt the plants. If the droplets taste sweet (seriously, taste them!) they're just happy sap. I wouldn't treat this plant in any way.
