Should I water my catesetum?
Default Should I water my catesetum?

Hi guys,
I bought this last year in Jan. I grew it thru summerand did not flower in winter. Until now there are new spike and new growth. Last year, I started to water in last May. Because of spike, Should I water this now?

Thanks
Tony

Personally I would wait untill you see roots hit the bottom of the pot. Looks like you may be close but i think you ahould wait a little longer

I'd give it maybe another week, it's really close (some of the roots do look pretty close to 3 inches already) You probably would be OK dribbling a little water around the edges but it's better to go a little longer than necessary than to do it too soon.

A suggestion... drop the plant (pot and all) into a terracotta pot. No need for extra medium but you could fill in with some bark. It's going to get very top-heavy as the new growths mature (and likely will have some roots escape) and this approach will help it to not fall over (which especially you wouldn't want when spikes develop!) Next winter, it could certainly use a repot but definitely leave it undisturbed now.

Remember that new roots should be a minimum of 4" long before you water. That said, waiting until the roots are 6" long on a big plant like this is how I prefer to treat them. I'd give it at least 2 or 3 more weeks before I considered watering.

Agree. I'll wait.
Last year without spike, I watered it last week of May.

If you haven't, take a look at the Sunset Valley Orchids Web page cultural information on this group of plants. If you sign up for the newsletter you will get seasonal E-mails with photo examples, telling you what to do.
