Grobya cipoensis in bloom!
Default Grobya cipoensis in bloom!

I bought this Grobya on a whim while buying other orchids in May of 2021 from Tarzane Group. When it arrived, it had two immature growths and a bunch of leafless bulbs, but no sign of future or former spikes that I could tell.

I've kept it in my refrigerated terrarium, which hovers around 70°F/21°C at night and stays below ~76°F/24°C during the day. It's watered daily and gets what I would describe as moderate light. While it was in active growth last summer, I hung a teabag full of Osmocote slow-release fertilizer pellets at the top of the mount in addition to my usual weakly-weekly fertilizing with MSU.

The two growths produced a bunch of leaves and became bulbous at the base and then very little happened... until late spring, when a new growth appeared. And finally, in late June, spikes emerged from last summer's growths! From spike to full bloom, I'd say it took a little over a month. A couple buds on the right-hand spike blasted, but overall I am very pleased with how this flowered.

Here is my attempt to capture the opening of the buds in a time-lapse. (My cats jostled the camera at the end while doing battle.)

That is just spectacular! I failed at a Grobya awhile back, you inspire me to try again. Those are very intriguing flowers.

Your photography and growing skills are inspiring to see. Tarzane has great little plants(and some not so little) but Grobya I've not seen ''in person". TY for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words, all. I feel really lucky that this has been happy in the conditions I provided and has turned out to be such a crowd-pleaser, given that I had never even heard of Grobya before buying it!

thank you!

the mount is 3" x 5" and each flower is about an inch tall.

not really any fragrance that I've detected, but it's been in a terrarium so i could have missed it if it's only fragrant at specific times of day.
