That new growth is probably connected under the medium. At this point, RESIST any urge to water. It is not big enough. Until roots and new growth are 3-4 inches don't water. Put your hands in your pockets so that you can't reach for the watering can... Now is the time to just observe. It will do what it will do, but it definitely does not want any water, probably for several more months.

That new growth might actually have popped up from a root. This group makes keikis on the roots from time to time.

I think this has to be the case with this one because this was a seedling and the rhizome is in the center of the pot about an inch from where this little guy is... It had occured to me that maybe it popped from a root, but have never heard of that before; catasetums definitely are strange!
