VERY early flower spike....? cause for concern?
So i was doing my after the rain assessment as we had about 24 hours of deluge and i spotted this.
i am 99% sure it is a spike but why and given how small the new pbulb is still, should i be concerned?

Very likely a flower spike. Different Catasetinae have different bloom times (and some may do it more than once in the season). Can't tell from what I can see of the tag whether that's Ctsm. Melana Davison or a cross with that as one parent.. I have Ctsm. Melana Davison, and over several years, I have blooms from mid-late June, July, and even have one (a bonus) in December. So this one will be blooming probably end of June/early July, which is right in line with what I have seen. Mine also has given me male flowers, female flowers on separate spikes at different times (clever, prevents self-polination), but even on occasion both sexes on the same spike (which is really cool)

amazing...it is a hybrid with the Ctsm. Melana Davison so i am delighted to hear it may just be an overachiever!!! i acquired this plant last year so this is the first year of blooms for me and i am delighted to hear it is not like some death knell

There are other early Catasetinae too... my Ctsm. expansum is also in spike. That's another blooming fool.

Anything with Ctsm tenebrosum will be an early bloomer as well.
I have the Ctsm tenebrosum x Ctsm callusom cross from SVO last year. Fred is expecting it to spike 2-3 times a year. Both of my plants are in spike. However, one of the spkie tips was chewed on by a slug. Glad I have 2!

My (Ctsm Double Down x tigrinum) spiked shortly after new growth started and began blooming w 10 flowers several days ago.
