Hard to say for sure Mook. It could be linked in some way. Not sure if the narrow portion is due to slow-down of growth ..... or whether due to quick upwards growth.

In the end, it has to store some water somewhere - and your plant did really well overall.

I'm thinking that there's various possible ways for that particular shape to be produced - not necessarily due to late summer start, or early fall start. Although, it wouldn't be surprising if that's it --- due to temperature, lighting and things like that in the earlier stages of the growth period.

I took some snapshots of one of my Fdk. After Dark 'SVO Black Pearl', which has a sort of narrow section at the base too. The main thing is the plant makes it nicely to the end of the season in a healthy state - and your plant certainly did that.

Then maybe if lucky - get at least some spikes. The little growth coming out of the one in the pic is very smooth and rounded all over - polished jellybean smooth all around - possibly the beginnings of a flower spike.

This leapfrog growth, is that why it started so early last year?
Not sure!
