It's a new leave. A flower spike looks like a green root growing upward. In other word, it is tubular in shape.

Ugh, just growths, no spikes...

I am trying a new strategy: no fertilizer. Just water and light. I have read that sometimes a drop in nitrogen will spur a plant into the bloom cycle. We'll see.

Sorry if this has been discussed...I didn't read all the other posts...how much light are you giving this guy? I don't grow it any more but when I did, it was in the high end of catt light. It bloomed very well and without fail each year. It smelled awful but it was beautiful.

You grew a bulbo in high light?? Is that the key to echinolabiums blooms? May i ask if you did anything else?

I don't grow many bulbos anymore because of the space they require but many actually do better in catt level light. Not all...but many.

W/echino, I grew it very bright and moist. I had it in a large net basket w/a mix of mostly sphag along w/some bark and chc. The chc was well rinsed before being used. My temps ranged from a low of 58 during some winter nights to a high of whatever mother nature threw at it during the summer days. For me, it was an easy grower and certainty easier to bloom than some of the others I grew.

thank you, katrina. mine is also an easy grower, it has put on 11 new growths since summer 2014 when i got it. but those blooms! so elusive!

it is right next to my other bulbos under 50% shade cloth. I just can't imagine those big, fleshy leaves being able to handle high cattleya light, but i'll have to accept it and make some adjustments. i'm going to see if the no-fertilizer treatment does anything first...there's lots of time to experiment...
