Oh I'm sure he's breathing it in. The flies are actually fighting each other for best postion. The flower smells like poop.

Not sure what to expect from her this year, she's outgrowing her basket and several pseudobulbs are just hanging in the air.

I was thinking you might be holding your breath around it. I knew the flies would love it.

The plant looks so well grown!

And it already attracted a fly. :-) Is it smelly though? If so is the smell strong? I consider getting the Wilbur Chang (echinolabium x carunculatum), iospe says they are both smelly but does not specify.

You can safely believe Bulbophyllums smell awful unless the listing says otherwise. Many of the stinky ones are not that bad unless you stick your nose into the flowers. Don't let the smell put you off - they are amazing orchids.

I can't decide whether mine smells like poop or horrible rotten death. Somewhere in between, maybe.

The flies love it, it has been fiercely guarded by them since it opened.

Wilber Chang would be similar as carunculatum smells worse than echinolabium in my opinion.

BUT ! ! ! A little stink never hurt anyone. It is produced by a flower and not an actual rotting carcass. Our bodies reject these smells because coming in close contact with rotten things can actually make us ill. But the flower's odor is just a mimic. That knowledge helps me 'stomach' it

Honestly I like to get my nose right up there and analyze the fragrance. Is it poop? Is it rotten roadkill? It doesn't put me off because, as i mentioned above, it's just a flower.

Plus I can go over to my Vanda falcata and 'clear' my nasal passages with its spicy jasmine scent if the Bulbo gets to be too much.
