I've been looking at all of these bulbos and finally decided I would get one to try. This was one of the bulbos I was looking at. Your plant looks healthy and should be a fun orchid.

Hi Sydney, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one out there venturing into growing a new type of orchid! From everything I read, this is one of the easiest Bulbophylum to grow. I would bet with your geography it will grow beautifully. Please post a picture!

I'm still at that stage where one, or two, of everything sounds good. LOL. Bulbophyllum have such unusual blooms that I just have to try them.

It bloomed!

Awesome, good growing, you got a bloom very quick. And you have another bud about to open! I also tried my first bulbo this year. It is bulbo putidum. They seem like very forgiving plants, I am just awaiting mine to bloom still :). I find they like a lot of water.

Well there ya go! I wonder, was it those bits of moss you tucked around, and increased humidity, that encouraged it to bloom? Cute flower.

Thank you LovePhals and Hiester for looking. I think when I added the sphagnum moss it created a more humid environment from around the roots. Kawamoto Orchids indicated it was "bloom size". So I guess it was ready to bloom. Before I put the moss around the roots, it looked too dried out and it seemed I needed to water it at least twice a day. Now I water just early in the day, once a day.
It did not have any flower spikes. These came out a complete surprise. I have noticed that during the day this flower closes up. But at night fall and early morning, it is wide open as the flower close up. |
Very cute, I love the color on this one!

Hmm! Being very recently bitten by the Bulbo bug, your story just triggered the funny feeling "I gotta find this plant"!
Very nice plant, lovely indeed. Congrats :-) |
Congrats on getting a bloom so quickly. Whatever you're doing, it seems to be happy. :)
