Bulbophyllum Fascinator in Bloom!
Oh my goodness. I am so excited. When I came home from school today, I noticed that my fascinator bud had opened up. I hadn't expected it because it isn't that long, but I love it. Now I have included pictures of the bloom and there is something interesting about it. Most fascinator blooms are up to 9" long. My bloom is about 3" long. Does anyone know why this may be? Could it possibly be a dwarf? Also, while carrying it to take pictures of it, I noticed something that scared the crap out of me. The sepal (part in the middle) moves up and down like the eyes of a baby doll when you tilt it forward and backwards. I almost dropped the plant because I thought the bloom was moving. I have also included pictures of the sepal in the up (pic 6) and down positions (pic 7). So amazing! Anyways, here are the much anticipated pictures.

The moving part is the lip, not a sepal. This is characteristic of all Bulbophyllums.

Did you put that moss there or did it grow there? Very nice bulbo by the way. I love it.

When I bought the plant a couple of months back the top of the pot was covered with that moss. I liked the way it looked so when I repotted the plant I decided to put it back on there. Hopefully it will start growing within the next couple of months. It dries out really fast so I water it everyday with a spray bottle just as I do all of my plants.

Chris - I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the flower, out of all the ones that were awarded, not a single one measured 9" and they measured as small as a little more than 5".

I can just imagine your excitement as seeing this flower! It looks as though it is poking out it's tongue  Certainly a fascinating fascinator. It looks perfect in it's pot too. Maybe the flower will be larger as it becomes an older plant. |

Very beautiful bulbophyllum! But it is not bulbophyllum fascinator, let it be bulbophyllum putidum.
