Default Bulbophyllum blumei

Bulbophyllum blumei is what is on the tag, is this correct or is it really Bulbophyllum masdevalliaceum?

I got this one in a trade last year from a friend last year. The flower is a little past its peak as it opened last week but I did not have time to get a picture until today. I did find 4 or 5 more spikes forming thought

Hmmm...wow, this is crazy! First of all, love the bloom, Tom. Nice growing!! I'd been looking at possibly getting this Bulbo from Andy's at some point. But, the question of which species is it is really interesting!! I don't have nearly the personal expertise to venture a guess. Even looking at the IOSPE pages for each leaves me wondering.

blumei: IOSPE PHOTOS

masdevalliaceum: IOSPE PHOTOS

Just from reading these, it seems that blumei can have two blooms on an inflorescence. Other than that, and perhaps some difference in their respective distributions...

Can't wait to see what other people think!

By comparing the photos on the IOSPE pages, I think it looks like a blumei. But I dunno, thats a pretty close call. Their profiles say that blumei like hot to cool temps whereas masdevalliaceum only like hot temps. What types of temperatures are you giving it?

Whichever it is, its really pretty. Good job!

Ive heard a lot of chatter about these being the same species despite the fact they come from different locations. Regardless I give you a word of caution. They are cranky little plants and HATE to be repotted and will limp along for a few months afterwards.

Gorgeous blooms! I just got mine not too long ago in spike, I repotted it and it lost them all. Oh well. E. Siegerist's Bulbo book doesn't help my much in distinguishing between the two species either. Will have to look more closely. Thanks for sharing.

Yvan - It may be a "bridge too far" for a beginner, but I just ordered a Bulbophyllum blumei from Andy's. I was impressed with how genuinely concerned Harry was that be successful. And I was. Both Paphs bloomed on cue and were spectacular. If things work out I will post photos. Sharing is fun.

Looks great! Have you smelled it yet? I remember mine smelling a bit like cheese, though you would have to put your nose right up to the flower to smell it.

Yours is so pretty it makes me sorry that I gave mine away. I brought a number of things to the Orchid Society for a fund raiser, that was one of them.
