How is the spike coming? and out of curiosity, did you have a big difference in day and night temps to induce bloom?

It bloomed but it sort of fizzled out. Only two of the snakey bits bloomed. The two bits that bloomed looked really nice and the fragrance was really sort of good, like fresh mushrooms.

I don't really know what induced the blooming. I had just transplanted it and I think it was loving the new media: tree fern fiber and sphagnum.

But I do also have a good night time drop in temperature. . .at least 15 degrees.

Hopefully, I'll see better blooms next time around!

Gwen,
Do you grow yours outside in filtered light? What's the temp and humidity where you grow this one?

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

I am currently growing it under flourescent lights. Temps are around 80 high, to 65 low. Pretty low humidity, around 50%, I am guessing.

If I were growing this one in optimum conditions, which I am not, I would suggest bright diffused light, intermediate to warm temps and humidity in the 65% range and good air circulation.

It seems to be very happy with the media, tree fern fiber and choppped sphagnum moss.

I use 1/4 to 1/2 strength MSU fertilizer and it's growing well with plump and happy looking bulbs.

Keep us posted on how you're doing with yours!

Very awesome growing, Gwen! I have this one and now realize that my new growth is a PB and not a spike.
I asked in another post if anyone knows how to apply blood meal to these as I read they like it in the spring. Biker or Gwen, have either of you used this?????
I love this site! I learn so much from all of you! Thanks!

Hiya Kiki!

No, I haven't used the blood meal but I am thinking that the MSU fertilizer has pretty much all it needs.

I love this site too!

My Lovely Elizabeth finally bloomed
It's such a weird, beautiful looking bloom! Smells like my dog's poop.
