From a grower's stand point, are plants that produce a lot of basal keikis an unwanted trait? Are they the first to be culled out of the group of seedlings?

No, it's not necessarily an unwanted trait. I really doubt folks are culling seedlings just because they produce basal keikis.

The Phalaenopsis market is fueled by mass produced clones. Basically, the people producing those potted plants and plants for cut flowers are selecting based on flower size, color, quality, etc and then making thousands upon thousands of clones of the best plants. So, they aren't necessarily culling, it's just that they're not propagating the ones that don't have good flowers or marketable qualities.

Most mass-produced Phals are flowering the first time when sold, so they generally aren't old enough to produce basal growths.
