new blooming orchids need repotting

I have several new phal orchids that are in bloom and are in clear plastic pots with sphagnum. I can see that the roots are very crowded and some are so badly packed that they are warping the pot. Do I repot them now while in bloom? Or wait until they are done blooming? One is a very large plant, the others must be minis since they quite small but blooming. I had two small ones that look root-bound and are not in bloom. Two of these plants are grocery store orchids, all of the rest are from major on-line orchid dealers.

I would suggest waiting until the plant is done blooming if you want to enjoy the flowers.

From my experience (and general consensus of the OB) it doesn't seem to bother phals too much to be repotted in flower. My phals sometimes flower for months. I suggest some extra care in the process. I wouldn't suggest this for any other type.

When I'm in that position I don't want to chance breaking the spike while repotting. I leave them alone until the spike is done...

I also was told by a couple vendors recently that its not a real good idea to repot for about 30 days until the new plant has had an opportunity to acclimatize to its new home.

It would be nice to always be able to wait. But sometimes you can't. I've done it many times with no Ill effects that I can tell, but only phals.

I personally feel that if the repotting really is urgent, then its best to cut off the spikes and do the repotting. No need to repot just because a plant is root bound; if the media is rotting, then the spikes are of little importance. To each their own.

If your plants are potbound spring and warmer weather is the perfect time to repot. Plant are making new growth and roots, the perfect time to give them more room. Also the perfect time to acclimate to your conditions.

Repotting now should not effect your plants health and if your careful of the spike(s) there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to enjoy the blooms for several weeks more (depending how long they have already been on the plant).

As a side note remember to be careful with your watering. New media regardless if its moss or bark will require more frequent watering as it will dry out faster than it has.
