Flowers Wilting?
Default Flowers Wilting?

So, I got an orchid for the first time and day three the flowers are wilting. The leaves are fine and stems are fine but the flowers are ripping at the edges and wilting. They also have a floppy less stable texture then they did before. I need some help. I’m completely new to this and I did get the so called easiest orchid to take care of.

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

We need more information. What kind of orchid is it? Is there a name tag? What is it potted in? What are your growing conditions - temperature, light, humidity? Can you post photos?

It’s a white Phalaenopsis orchid that has been dyed blue. It’s potted in bark and moss. Temperature is always in the 80s in the morning and afternoon and 70s at night. Light is a bright shade, no direct sunlight. Humidity is around 50. I can post pictures in the morning. Where I am it’s 11 at night and I’m in bed, sorry.

Also, thank you for welcoming me!

The flowers have a natural lifespan. Root rot will lead to early dropping of flowers, but the leaves usually look poorly, too. Changes in temperature and humidity can also cause premature flower loss. Any chance it got a substantial chill on the trip home with you?

When I took it inside it was only outside for around 2-4 minutes because I was making sure to get in quickly.

My best guesses would be either the flowers are old, or the change in temperature/humidity/light are responsible. It should grow well for you and bloom again in the future.

If you haven't seen it, there is a sticky thread here devoted to learning how to grow Phals. From the left menu choose Forums, then Beginners. Look in the top section for The Phal abuse stops here.

Pictures would help.

If you live where it is cold, there is a possibility that it might have had less than ideal conditions before you bought it or, if the flowers were exposed to the cold (and not covered or protected) that might have been enough to do them in. Or, as said, the flowers might have reached the end of their natural lifespan.

Thankfully, Phals often bloom again on the same spike so you might get new flowers. That is why I never cut the spikes until they turn brown.
