Default Catt flowering

when do Catts usually flower? I know they're all different but does anyone have some input on these two of mine; I have one that produced a sheath and has since started a new growth with no sign of any buds coming into the sheath. Then I have another that the most recent growth has matured with no sheath but you can see the little 'button' at the base of the leaf and also has started a new growth. Thanks for the tip Susanne.

Susanne,

If the Cattleya is in sheath, then you have about a month plus 1 to 2 weeks until flowering... buds will slowly emerge from the sheath in a few weeks... you won't see anything happening at this stage.

As for the one that matured without a sheath, that growth will never bloom... usually when this happens, it is either the new growth is not mature enough to bloom, or it is in incorrect conditions... but I would have to know which species you are dealing with to give you any further information upon proper culture... hybrids are usually easier, unless you are dealing with something like a Cattleya velutina x Cattleya schilleriana... =)

Some of the catt hybrids will produce a sheath a long time before flowering from it, and some will produce sheaths that don't end up flowering ever.

also, on some hybrids the sheath will dry up and look completely dead prior to buds emerging from it.

so a better answer is "it depends." what is the exact name of your plant?

My C Penny Kuroda produced a large sheath over a month ago and ...still nothing!
Now, with all the changes I've made in my culture, it's going crazy with new roots and a new growth. I'm not sure if that sheath will ever produce anything. I had another plant produce an empty sheath last year and it never bloomed either!

Scott, the first one in sheath is C (loddigesii var harissoniae 'Impassionata' x mendelii 'Model') and the second is BLC Ranger 6 ‘A-OK’ FCC/AOS x C Donna Craig ‘Texas’ HCC/AOS. Not sure if that helps or not
