Should I mention to you that there is a show this month 24&25 on MSU's campus? A far better show than AA's and as an added bonus, after the show you can hit the Dairy Store on campus for icecream. (MSU makes there own -- a number of different flavors -- and they do it very, very well.)

That is wonderful! My kids do grow herbs for cooking and one likes lavender but that is as far as the plant hobby goes even though I have always grown and loved plants.

I am guessing that I won't be able to stay away from the show. There is still time to pre-order from Ecuagenera....

To OP: NICE

I was at the show too, and also got my first phrag and a twinkle. Also picked up Little Atro, my first den. I did a lot of looking and more looking and also left some behind that I later wished I hadn't....

It was a nice show! I've purchased from Hausermann's before (and they and Nate's do an orchid show in Chicago in September which is amazing), and from New World Orchids. A lot of places will only bring what it's in bloom at the time because those are more likely to sell, but I was glad to see so much variety and non-bloomers. Also super happy to see our local hydroponic store manager there, they carry a lot of orchid supplies and I got my T5HO lights from them and was really pleased to be able to purchase these things locally and not online. All in all it was a really good turnout for the size of the venue! I'm so happy the vendors made the trip and I hope we made it worth their while!

(meanwhile at home...quickly tucking the newbies in amongst the familiar faces before anyone takes too much notice and starts asking pointed questions)

Thanks!! I walked the vendor area like 3 times before picking out my pretties. I went back yesterday and it was suuuper picked over (not a surprise with how busy it was Saturday morning. You could barely move!). I diiiiid come home with another phal (a fragrant one from Hauserman) and my kiddo got one more. How can I say no to a cute little boy who loves plants?

Years ago a member of the Henry Shaw Cactus Society wrote a newsletter article about the many ways she had hidden new plants from her husband over the years. The best was when she left them in her car for several days during warm weather. She snuck them into the house one at a time over about a week. Cactus widowers don't notice just one new plant.

What was the fragrant Phal from Hausermann's?

Neat!

Norman Fang spoke to our society recently about the development of harlequin Phals. Golden Peoker was the first harlequin. First-generation crosses of GP x something else yield only a few harlequins. In early crosses, the spots are highly variable on the flowers on the same plant, varying with temperature while developing. Later generations of breeding produce a higher proportion of harlequins, and more stable spots.
