Advice needed with dendrobium roots & repotting
Default Advice needed with dendrobium roots & repotting

Hi, I need advice on my dendrobium, unfortunately I went away for a few weeks in august which resulted in my plant being over watered (when I came home it was sitting in water) since then it has had plenty of sun and I have been watering a few times a week and misting now and again (letting water run through the pot). There has been new leaf growth and a few recent root growth but there are a lot of dead rotted roots too.. should I completely re-pot and and cut away the rot? I'm a little scared of doing so! Thanks in advance

I really don't like the look of those roots. It looks as tho it was potted originally in moss, and that has turned to compost. I would get it out, look at those roots, and I suspect remove/wash off all the old medium I could and repot it in fine sieved bark in something that was bigger diameter but only 4 inches deep to stop the roots rotting.

Me neither, so leave the bad roots in there or remove? I always thought it looked mossy with soil which I thought was odd but guessed this type of orchid just needed that, I suppose the roots are probably struggling to move!

Do as Bil sugested.
The medium should be something that allows air to circulate in between the roots.

Please repot it soon. Yes, remove the obviously dead roots. That medium is suffocating. A testimony as to how hardy those dens are. If you have a heavy watering hand, use a clay pot and rinsed bark...fine or medium would be my choice but anything is better at this point.

Hahaha go easy on me, it's my first orchid, hopefully not my last.

I think I'm lucky that it's still alive, hoping to keep it that way
