Phalaenopsis NoID Spike!!?? - Orchid Board

I was looking around my orchids when I noticed something green on my phal. I thought it was just a root but when I looked closer, I noticed it was spiky and had a little "sheath"! Is this my first flower spike!?!?

I've never actually made an orchid spike and bloom before!

Yay!! I'm so excited to see the flowers! I should keep taking care of it normally right? Or should I do something to prevent it frm breaking?

Ignore it, just treat it as usual and go do a happy dance. If you want to stake it, it will have to be much longer.

Thanks for the info! One last question, though, how fast do these things grow? How many days/weeks until it blooms?

Each orchid is different. Each Phal is different. A month, maybe two is a wild guess.

Congratulations! As Dollythehun said, each plant is different in how long it takes from the time you first notice the spike until you have flowers. My NOID Phal. started a spike this past April and the first flower did not open until three months later. And the spike on mine never got any longer than about six inches. I'll just say be careful with it, though, in moving or watering. I accidentally knocked one of the buds off of mine when putting it in the sink to water it.

Thanks for the congrats! Since most phals live here and this is literally orchid heaven (haven?) I am expecting this one to bloom in one or two months.

I certainly will not move the orchid around because it's mounted and I spray it daily. If this is the same kind as the other orchids the guy I got it from had, then the spike will be around 6 inches and the flowers will be around 2 inches wide.

I love little itty bitty orchids with little itty bitty flowers!
