packing penuts

does anyone know where to go to buy packing penuts for the bottom of orchid pots? I found an office supply place that sells them... but they are biodegradeable!!

Geeze! and the one time i need something that is not environmentally friendly!!! lol

Hey There! I use the peanuts that come in packages and you can buy them at any postal shipping store or your local ups store. I use them in the bottoms of some of my orchids and it seems to work really well.

Try UPS Store or a Packing place.

Too bad you didn't know someone who works in a store that gets packages with packing peanuts in their boxes. Places like beauty salons, florists, and anywhere that orders delicate things needing protection. People are more than happy to give the stuff away!
I use wine corks also. The real cork, not that plastic stuff that comes in many wines now. A local ski area has wine tasting parties alot and I know one of the workers there who collects them for me.

What a great idea, Kiki! The cork probably lasts quite some time, doesn't it? Do you do anything special pre-use?

Hi Yvan,
No I don't do anything special to the corks. The roots just love to dig into the cork. The sweetness from the wine has some type of special properties that orchids love. Sugar is sometimes used as a healing property for plants, anyway. I have a few orchids hanging in a wooden basket with just corks holding it in there and no medium. They are thriving! I got this tip from a seasoned orchid grower.
