I have to ask a question: Why are you considering a plant when you don't know it's needed care conditions? It seems a bit "cart before the horse" to me. I'd urge you to first know your growing conditions and THEN determine what plants will thrive within those conditions and buy those.

These plants should do well in a warm, bright area suitable for Cattleyas.

I don't have this, but do you realize that it can get up to 2 METERS tall? A small controlled environment for a seedling will not contain it for long if it is healthy.

I kept a collection for many years...had a great cattleya that I bought when my first (child) was born....others after that, taking the travelling 'show' across the country a few times....it was tough sometimes, and I killed a lot with my calloused care...I had to sell all a few years back. now I am rebuilding in my old age, lol....

the thing about orchids is this: these are NOT begonias or violets. to grow one for 5 years and then lose it can be devastating! they become FRIENDS!

unless you have a LARGE greenhouse, it would be easier to adapt orchids into your lifestyle if they can actually LIVE in your lifestyle, the main thing is, make it fun, make it easy, that way you can haul them around. you don't have to tote a tractor trailer load of equipment.....

I love that ren. I have wanted one for a long time, and I will get one. my 4' specimen died in a freeze that I was not prepared for, so I know how tough it gets, juggleing kids, family, job, and still fitting in a few orchids.

you might want to get orchids that are easy to put out for the summer, that don't take up much room, that you can keep in your kitchen....etc....just a thought....

Big red Renantheras need almost full tropical sun and high humidity all year, more so than Vandas. They also need watering every day. They are much less tolerant of insufficient light than Vandas. A Vanda will grow but not bloom in too little light; a red Renanthera is likely to fungus out and die.

That is a beautiful orchid and I see why you want one! Here is an OS article on them:
Renanthera

I don't grow this one so I cannot give you much help. Hopefully others will help you.

As for growing the impractical, many people do it and have fun doing it. I would just advise doing as much research as possible. I was told that one just could not grow a Theobroma cacao in a zone 5 home but one has been growing in my home for the past eight years and it even blooms!
