Help - new Dendrobium
Default Help - new Dendrobium

Hi to all! I need some advice about a new Dendrobium I have recently purchased. When I got it, it had 2 flower spikes on it fully bloomed. Now those blooms are falling off and I am not sure if I need to cut the spikes or let them alone.

Plus, when I bought it, the orchid is in a glass cube with little beads that absorb water with nothing else. Should I re-pot the orchid into a more acceptable medium and pot?

Thanks to all!

Now that the plant is done blooming, you can cut the spikes. I'm a little uneasy about an orchid in a glass cube with water absorbing beads and if it was mine, I'd repot it into an orchid medium only because I'd be afraid of the roots rotting. Maybe someone who has had experience with the situation you've described will have another take on this! Good luck.

The flower spikes should be cut back to the plant. On a dendrobium the spikes do not re bloom. As far as the beads in the glass cube, this could be a semi-hydroponic growing medium. A lot of orchids grow well in this medium so I wouldn't re-pot. I would look at the semi-hydro forum in the site menu.
