What did I buy??
Default What did I buy??

Happy Friday!

What type of orchid did I buy below? I thought it was pretty and forgot to ask. Disregard the blooms as it is from another Phal. Do I repot it with bark like I do my others? Thank you in advance.

Yipes, sorry to ask, but could you post another picture? This is very low res, and tiny. Hard to see anything. Okay from what it looks like it is a long leafed orchid with pseudobulbs. Could be any kind of Oncidiumm type, or zygopetalum-- might even be a cymbidium from what I can see. I am guessing oncidium type.

Here you go. That's my mom's. We each got the same one. Here's mine and let me know if it's clear enough. Thank you for your help.

My guess is a miltoniopsis. We will see when the blooms open. This one is very nicely grown because no accordion leaves. They like a lot of water, when growing, and medium light.

Even though it loves water, it has fine roots, so they will rot easily if the water does not run in and then right out of the pot. So good drainage as well.

I am hoping for a nice purple "waterfall" type, which is what I think this will be.

Thank you so much. Now I can do my research on it. I will post a new picture once it blooms

since the drainage is very important, do you suggest I just use bark alone with no moss at all? I am in south Florida and it will be outside in filtered sun.

South Florida might get too hot for a Miltoniopsis in the late spring, summer and part of fall. Perhaps consider bringing it indoors to a bright window during hot weather.

People use all different kinds of media. The key is not to let it dry out completely. If you can water frequently bark is fine. If you sometimes can't get to your plants for a week it might be better to use a mix retaining more water.

Thanks a million to everyone. I have a vanda that I water right now twice a day, so I can do another once a day. Thank you so much again. I am a true novice, with a couple of different species so I just want to make sure that I am doing everything right.
