Stanhopea suggestions PLEASE.

OK, my first Stan is on its way. I am planning to hang it in this basket in sphagnum.

Now, what I am looking for is hints from people who have had /got one along the linnes of

"For goodneess sakes don't do this!"

"This is really important"

"Whatever you do, ...."

You get the idea. Anything interesting or useful please.

I'm also running this in the Stan section in case someone there misses it, because I would like responses from both beginners and experts.

Hola Bil:

Do you know what Stanhopea species or hybrid name that you will get? That will make a difference in its temperature needs.

I have S. occulata, which likes it cool in the winter with reduced water, gets strong sun in the morning and dappled sun to shade at noon and afternoon.
In summer, it is hung in a tree for shade with more water and more fertilizer, but in dilute portions.

If you can get seaweed extract to add to your regular fertilizer, do so.

Mine has been uncomplaining and produces up to 4 spikes in early summer nearly every year.
Remember, enjoy the spike at every stage of growth. Once blooms open, they smell heavenly, but will last only 4 to 5 days.

It's a Stanhopea schilleriana hopefully a bit more warmth tolerant.

I water all the orchids with a very dilute solution, at each watering, and a light splash of kelpmax every month.

They all seem to be thriving on it, so hopefully the Stan will like it too.
