I don't have a g/h currently but in all my research of talking to friends who have one in my area of the country and in other areas...smaller is harder to regulate temperature. It's harder to keep it warm and way harder to cool it enough and keep it cool in the summer. Also, everyone has told me to get bigger than I think I need...because I will eventually need bigger.

Also, if you have good exposure for the g/h as a lean-to...all have told me that they are more economical to heat and cool as a lean-to because you can take advantage of the natural "block" afforded by the structure having the house on one side. Even if you can't tap into the heating and cooling system...having the main house as one of the walls apparently makes a big difference in this heating and cooling bills. Definitely easier to tap into the electric and water when it's attached.

The lean-to is a good way to go. Depending on your location, you will need a shade cloth. I like aluminet. It will keep your GH waayyy cooler than shadecloth.

Honestly, the little tent GH are really hard to keep stable temps in. You'll also need lots of airflow to keep it from getting too stuffy for orchids. If its dry where you are, a portable swamp cooler would help keep things from overheating.

The thing about greenhouses is if there I sunshine they will heat up fast. Even in the middle of winter. I recommend a book like the greenhouse gardeners manual. Its a good beginner one. Sorry if this is more than you want, its just a whole science in and of itself.

It is definitely possible to make a small one like you want work, you just will have to understand all the factors and how to outsmart them .

I appreciate everyone's words of wisdom.

Unfortunately our neighborhood association has prohibited us from putting up a portable greenhouse.

A bit of a drag, but hopefully at some point we can put up something that'll be approved.

How about a permanent one? Needn't be too permanent (wink wink)

Or a pergola that has a roof, and you can just pop the sides on in the winter?

This encapsulates everythig that I have learned in life. A LOT of people when told "No!" simply accept it.

Always find out why they are saying no. There is very often a simple way round this things, but if you ask, most people haven't the same vested interest that you do.

Long, long ago, I was going to be hammered by the tax people over something.

he tax people said "You're screwed!"
My account said "You're screwed!"
My Lawyer said "You're screwed!"

N one said there was any hope at all. So, I went into the tax offices and asked them for the rules concerning that, and I went home and I put their rules together in the way that showed I was right.

Least you think I was delving deep, the critical document was an idiots' guide to the subject.

I won my case, and I did it all by myself.

Odds are, there's a way round it, but only if you want it and are prepared to go to a bit of trouble.

Of course, it may turn out that there is no way round, but at least you will have tried.

PS, get what they say in writing!!!!!
