What will happen to these two new growths ?
Default What will happen to these two new growths ?

I got this den nobile this February in bloom. Over the months it has 5 new growths that are maturing and 6th on its way. Then there are these two new growths. Will they stop growing or die if I give the plant winter dormancy on Halloween? I really look forward to some flowers next spring

Correction, the bigger new growths are still growing. They are as thick as the old canes but still a tad shorter

You have to do what the plant needs when it needs it; they don't understand calendars. As long as the plant is still growing, try to keep it warm, well-lit and watered. When the new growths are almost mature, cut back on the watering.

If a plant is in active growth give it all the conditions that support healthy growth - unless you place a higher value on an artificial calendar schedule than on the health of the plant. Your choice.

If I don't give it dormancy then will the plant be full of keikis next spring? That can kill the mother plant

If you don't water a plant in active growth it might be dead next month.

I don't believe keikis will kill a parent plant in good health. More likely, a dying plant with dead roots puts out keikis in a last gasp effort to produce something that will survive. The owner who rotted the roots with poor cultural practices thinks the keikis are the problem rather than looking in the mirror.

Yep, plants do what they do. You can only react accordingly if you want to have plants in good health. You NEVER force a plant into dormancy unless it's the plants idea first.

I seem to remember Ray saying that what was needed in dormancy was no nitrogen, not no water. I assume that means to water sparingly but with no fertiliser.

I seem to recall that was in a discussion about S/H.
